URP Import Helper by Thomp Tech

URP Import Helper detects materials from imported Unity asset packages so you never forget to convert them.

Import an asset package into your URP project as usual. URP Import Helper checks the materials in that import, safely converts supported Built-in Standard materials to URP/Lit, and explains what still needs attention.

Available exclusively on the Unity Asset Store.

How it works

Import as usual. Review. Convert.

1

Import a package

Import an older Asset Store .unitypackage as usual. After Unity finishes importing and compiling, URP Import Helper checks the materials included in that import.

2

Review

In the default Ask mode, a non-modal review window shows how many materials are ready to convert, plus warnings and materials that will remain unchanged.

3

Convert

Choose Convert or Not now. Supported materials become URP/Lit, and the whole batch is one named Edit > Undo step.

Importing a package with Built-in Standard materials, the URP Import Helper review window appears, and Convert 3 materials converts them to URP
Import a package, review the detected materials, and click Convert.

Features

Built to make converting imports a habit you don't have to remember

Safe conversion

Converts standalone .mat assets from Built-in Standard (metallic workflow) to URP/Lit, only when they pass the safety checks. Everything else is left unchanged and explained.

Three modes

Ask, Convert automatically, or Report Only (Change Nothing). Saved per user, per project.

Reporting

The Console report covers counts, warnings and next steps. Expand Details and click a row to ping that material in the Project window.

Manual conversion

Select .mat files or folders and convert on demand, in every mode, without importing another package.

Undo

Each converted batch is one named Unity Edit > Undo step, such as Convert 6 materials to URP. Reverted files are saved for you.

Optional CLI & MCP

On Unity 6+, analyze and convert through the Unity CLI or an MCP-capable AI agent. Not required for normal Editor use.

Requirements

What you need

  • A Unity project with the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) installed and active.
  • Editor-only. It does not add runtime components to your game.
  • Optional CLI/MCP: Unity 6+ and com.unity.pipeline 0.8.0-exp.1. See the CLI & MCP Quick Start.

Limitations

What V1 doesn't do

  • Converts Built-in Standard (metallic workflow) to URP/Lit only. Publisher and custom shaders are not modified.
  • Embedded model materials and material variants are not converted in V1.
  • Installing it does not scan or convert your existing project, and it does not migrate a whole project's render pipeline.
  • Undo history does not survive a full Editor restart. Headless CLI runs have no Unity Undo; use version control.
